A Militia unit, part of Canada’s Army Reserve, is selected to be a testbed for an experiment called 60/40 where forty percent of the soldiers work full-time. The “forty percenters” are a group of mismatched soldiers forced to work together and the results are chaotic.
Jones and Rutherford are shocked to learn that 2nd Lt. Turner, a new and inept officer in the unit, is assigned to be their boss while they teach a recruit basic training course.
The unit is the subject of an investigative news story for an episode of “Canada and War” where soldiers are interviewed and asked about their work. During the interviews, we meet four new members to the unit.
When the Militia pay system goes haywire, no one gets paid for three months forcing everyone to adopt austerity measures. Meanwhile, Jones and Rutherford give 2nd Lt. Turner some fuel economy tips that have unintended consequences.
After half the unit’s part-time soldiers quit because of a faulty pay system, the forty percenters are tasked to conduct an ad-hock recruiting drive. Prospective applicants can only be described as unusual.
When a new federal regulation prohibits smoking in government buildings, Jones locks horns with the chief clerk who is telling everyone to stop smoking in the Mess, the only room where smoking is still allowed.
After his promotion to sergeant, Rutherford is assigned to conduct a recruit basic training course with Jones and Stiletto as instructors, but military training events don’t necessarily go as planned.
While on duty, Jones must contend with strange incidents throughout the camp only to discover the coke machine, next to his bed in the duty room, has its electric plug bolted to the wall.
In this episode, an explanatory pop-up bubble appears on the screen whenever the guys use army jargon that is unfamiliar to the audience.
After Stiletto is promoted to sergeant, everyone’s nightmares come true as he turns into a tyrant and operates with impunity.
